I just got my tax bill, which is based on the recent revaluation of Dumont property.
Needless to say, the bill is staggering.
Coupled with recent articles on the Bergenfield revaluation, my experience makes it quite clear to me that the system of basing local taxes on property values is broken.
Why is it that we penalize homeowners for taking care of their homes?
Why is it that a clever person who can hide that third bathroom in the basement behind a series of boxes when the assessor comes to inspect gets to pay $500 less each year than the person whose bathroom wasn't easy to hide?
The system is patently unfair and promotes all the wrong values.
We need to rethink how we assess homes.
People should be rewarded, not penalized, for improvements.
