Lawyers see asbestos bill running aground

An asbestos-litigation reform bill that Bay Area law firms have spent big bucks to oppose faces an uncertain future after a rocky week in the U.S.
Senate.
The bill which would have asbestos manufacturers and their insurers pay $140 billion into a trust fund for asbestos victims, thus ending their lawsuits cleared a big hurdle Tuesday as the Senate voted 98-1 to allow floor debate.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had intended to prevent this but reversed himself after seeing little support for the tactic.
