Asbestos fund good for victims, business, Ohio senators say

WASHINGTON — Kelly Tompkins says his company isn’t trying to avoid paying compensation to people sickened by exposure to asbestos.
But RPM International of Medina, which makes specialty coatings and sealants, wants to know how much it would pay out and thinks more money should go to victims than for legal fees, said Tompkins, RPM senior vice president.
He and other advocates of a $140 billion asbestos compensation fund for those exposed to the material came to Capitol Hill yesterday to push for the long-stalled legislation.
Proponents say the fund, which would be underwritten by asbestos manufacturers and insurers, would clear tens of thousands of asbestos cases from a clogged court system and aid both victims and the country’s ailing manufacturing sector.
